A Day of Mourning in Melbourne
Melbourne Tibetan Community and Tibet supporters observed A Day of Mourning & Protest at the Chinese Consulate General Office. In memory of the 154 Tibetans killed and the thousands injured or penalized in the recent Chinese government’s crackdown, a number of Tibetan men and women shaved their heads in mourning. The day was also to demonstrate our support for the Tibetan freedom fighters in and outside of Tibet, and to tell the People's Republic of China that we will never give up until the fundamental rights of Tibetan people are restored. The special guest speaker was the His Holiness Dalai Lama’s Representative in Australia, Mr. Tenzin Phuntsok Atisha, who gave a very moving speech highlighting the current deteriorating situation in Tibet, and appealed to the International leaders and communities for immediate support. Other speakers included Mr. Thupten Dhondup, the Tibetan Community President, Mrs. Alison Ribush from Australia Tibet Council, and Mr. Tenzin Tsetar from the local Tibetan Youth Movement. The participants recited prayers and chanted mantra so melodiously & harmoniously that would have surely much appreciated by the line of policemen and women and, their horses in front of us. The event was well covered in the evening national TV news.
