Tibet
For Immediate Release According to reliable information, the people of Minyag Gharthar in Tawu district, who have been carrying out a protest against the present Chinese repression in Tibet by refusing to engage in their farming activities, are being lured into resume farming by various dubious means. However, the Chinese authorities have not succeeded. Therefore, now they have instructed the officials in Tawu district, hailed from Minyag Garthar to go back and initiate and get the people to start farming activities in their own family fields. The Chinese government’s campaign of forcing Tibetans to denounce His Holiness the Dalai Lama has now been extended to even the villages and other remote areas. But the villagers and nomads, according to our information, have outright rejected the move. They resisting the campaign even at the risk of their lives. For example, during a recent event where the campaign was being carried out in the villages and nomadic areas of Drago district in the Karze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, a Tibetan named Tashi Sangpo of Gephen Likhogma and some others openly protested against the officials. As a result, the next day, Tashi Sangpo was beaten severely to the point he is said to be on his death-bed in a local hospital. In other news, on April 22, a large quantity of posters had been pasted overnight on the walls at Minyag Lhagang in Dartsedo district. The posters mainly contained slogans demanding complete independence for Tibet, calling for the return of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and fundamental human rights for the Tibetan people. Also, not only the strict restriction on the movement of Tibetans from one place to another is being implemented but even within the towns and villages, people are not allowed to gather in groups. For instance, in Kongpo Nyingtri region, only individuals by oneself are allowed to go and collect the yearly Fungus Butterfly (Yartsa Gunbhu – in Tibetan) with the fear that if groups were allowed, they could protest. At Ngaba Monastery in Amdo, due to the strict implementation of the so call ‘Patriotic-Education’ by the Chinese authorities, around 190 young monks had been forced to flee to other areas in order to avoid the campaign. In view of the critical situation in Tibet, we appeal the UN and international community of the urgent consideration of our following demands:
